Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power has announced a $1.1bn investment to build two wind power plants in Uzbekistan’s Bukhara and Karakalpakstan regions.

The plants will have a combined capacity of 800 MW, according to resolutions published on the Lex.uz portal.

The planned Gijduvan district wind farm in Bukhara will have a 300-MW capacity, while the facility to be built near Kungrad in Karakalpakstan will boast 500 MW.

ACWA Power has already initiated a thermal power project in Uzbekistan’s Syrdarya region, while it is developing two other wind power projects in Karakalpakstan with capacities of 1.5 GW and 100 MW, as well as 500-MW wind farms in the Peshku and Gijduvan districts of Bukhara region. It is anticipated that they will commence operations by year-end.

ACWA Power has pledged $1.085bn for the investments, with $682mn allocated for the Gijduvan project and the remainder destined for the Kungrad plant.

To secure a 25-year electricity supply guarantee, the project companies, ACWA Power Gijduvan Wind and ACWA Power KRPK Wind, have provided $29mn in bank guarantees.

The agreements also include the provision of overhead power lines to connect the wind power facilities to the national grid. National Electric Grids of Uzbekistan has committed to financing the integration of these lines over the next decade.

ACWA Power's is also advancing a green hydrogen plant project in Chirchik, engaging PowerChina for its construction.
