Toronto stocks traded lower at midday Tuesday, with technology, base metals and industrials equities lagging in the session.

Canada's S&P/TSX Composite Index fell 1.52% to 20152.18. The blue-chip S&P/TSX 60 was down 1.54% at 1207.12.

Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. and Kirkland Lake Gold Ltd. earlier Tuesday said they agreed to combine in an all-stock deal to create a Canadian mining company with an implied market capitalization of around $24 billion. Kirkland Lake Gold shares fell 6.6% to 51.78 Canadian dollars ($40.80). Agnico Eagle Mines shares fell 0.2% to C$63.70.

In the U.S., stocks tumbled as rising bond yields deepened a rout in shares of technology companies.

Other market movers:

Shares of Village Farms International Inc. fell 1.1% to C$10.65 after the produce supplier said it entered into an option agreement through which it received the right to buy an 80% ownership interest in Netherlands-based Leli Holland BV upon payment of 50,000 euros ($58,416.75). Through the agreement, Village Farms can buy 80% of Leli's shares for EUR3.95 million.
