On a per-share basis, the Baton Rouge, Louisiana-based company said it had profit of 59 cents. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs, came to 94 cents per share.

The results did not meet Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of eight analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $1.04 per share.

The home health care and hospice services provider posted revenue of $570.8 million in the period, exceeding Street forecasts. Six analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $564.9 million.

For the year, the company reported a loss of $9.7 million, or 30 cents per share, swinging to a loss in the period. Revenue was reported as $2.24 billion.

Amedisys shares have declined 1.5% since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Wednesday, shares hit $93.61, climbing slightly in the last 12 months.
