The Indianapolis-based company said it had net income of $6.79 per share. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, came to $8.04 per share.

The results surpassed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of 16 analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $7.72 per share.

The health insurer posted revenue of $38.63 billion in the period. Its adjusted revenue was $38.48 billion, which also beat Street forecasts. Fifteen analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $38.12 billion.
