LOS ANGELES, Aug. 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh have once again etched their name in history, maintaining their reputation as one of the greatest beach volleyball teams of all time, capturing their second consecutive Olympic gold medal by defeating China's top team of Tian Jia and Wang Jie, who are ranked second in the world behind May-Treanor and Walsh. The dominant United States women's team was heavily favored entering the Olympic Games to repeat their gold medal winning performance from Athens (2004), they did not disappoint as they once again reign as Olympic champions and become the first team, male or female, in Olympic beach volleyball history, to win back-to-back gold medals.

May-Treanor and Walsh maintain the upper hand over Tian and Wang with a 6-2 overall record against the Chinese team but winning against this powerhouse with home field advantage did not prove to be easy. The Americans took the match winning 21-18,21-18 in front of a full house at Chaoyang Park Beach Volleyball Grounds in Beijing.

Eight being an auspicious number in China, it is appropriate that May-Treanor and Walsh continued to build on current records notching their 108th consecutive match victory. With their gold medal winning performance, the duo also captured their 19th consecutive title. The reigning World Champions, two-time Olympic gold medallists and five-time AVP Crocs Tour champions have smashed the previous records of 89 straight match wins and 15 straight tournaments, set by May-Treanor and Walsh before the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

For Walsh, this milestone also marks her 100th career victory, becoming the youngest and fastest to ever reach the century mark. Walsh joins partner May-Treanor (103 wins) as only the second female in this elite group that includes beach volleyball legends Karch Kiraly, Sinjin Smith, Randy Stoklos and Kent Steffes.

May-Treanor and Walsh will return to the AVP Crocs Tour August 29-31 as the summer-long tour kicks off the AVP Crocs Shootout Series in Mason, Ohio, where the newly crowned gold medallists seek to defend their title as Cincinnati champions.
