BHP has achieved a significant lift in supplier spend with Indigenous businesses in Australia since establishing the BHP Local Buying Program in 2012.

A recent success story was demonstrated with Gumala Enterprises Pty Ltd, which is owned by Gumala Aboriginal Corporation. Gumala Enterprises secured a landmark contract at BHP's Yandi mine site in the Pilbara, Western Australia, creating around 20 jobs.

BHP identified an opportunity for a local contractor to sort and stockpile site-produced rock armour to support the construction of the flood protection bunds. By using the BHP Local Buying Program, BHP was able to place the contract with Gumala Enterprises.

The BHP Local Buying Program in Australia, delivered with a cost-neutral organisation, C-Res, is a full procurement-to-pay portal that allows eligible small local businesses to engage with BHP for direct competitive contracting opportunities of less than $US2 million. These businesses benefit from quicker-than-standard payment terms.
