During this period, he has led various organizations and functions in the development and implementation of capital market strategies and initiatives as well as the management of investment banking businesses and operations. Encik Azhar had served as the Chief Executive Officer of Capital Markets Malaysia, under the purview of the Securities Commission Malaysia from September 2015 to August 2018. He was the Executive Director of Merrill Lynch Malaysian Advisory Sdn Bhd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bank of America Corporation from September 2010 to August 2015 and remained on its Board until January 2016.

He was previously the Executive Vice President/Head of Investment Banking Division of Kenanga Investment Bank from August 2009 to July 2010 whereupon, he was appointed as a Council Member of the Malaysian Investment Banking Association (MIBA). Prior to that, he was the Director, Investment Banking, Global Banking and Markets at HSBC Corporate Advisory (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd from August 2007 to February 2009, and he also held various other senior positions with CIMB Investment Bank Berhad, Maybank Investment Bank Berhad and RHB Investment Bank Berhad from February 1996 to July 2007. He also previously served as an Independent Non-Executive Director of Penjana Kapital Sdn Bhd, a Minister of Finance Incorporated company.
