Caterpillar has promoted John Creed, current head of its energy and transportation group, to its newly created position of chief operating officer.

The construction-equipment maker said Monday that Creed will officially join the C-suite on Nov. 1 and report directly to Chief Executive Jim Umpleby.

Creed's successor in the energy and transportation group will be named at a later date, Caterpillar said.

Creed joined the company in 1997 and has worked in multiple Caterpillar divisions. He was promoted to chief financial officer of the energy and transportation group in 2013 and then to vice president of the company's finance services division in 2017. In 2018, he served as the company's interim chief financial officer, and later took over as group president of energy and transportation.

The promotion comes less than a week after Caterpillar tapped George Moubayed, current senior vice president of its enterprise strategy division, to be its next chief sustainability and strategy officer.
