Railway Equipment Company's 'BeiDou Plus'?Initiative Empowers Smart Railway Building

In 2021, Railway Equipment Company finished installing self-powered BeiDou Navigation terminals on its 518 main models. The installation enabled real-time positioning and tracking and accurate milage calculation of the company's all locomotives under condition-based maintenance, and also complemented its basic data of railway GIS. It symbolizes an achievement of the pilot program of Real-time Comprehensive Management System for Railway Freight Trains Throughout the Life Cycle Based on BeiDou Navigation Satellite System. The pilot program is part of China's efforts to build strength in transport.

Based on BeiDou navigation satellite system, 5G technology and the Internet of Things, the program has realized the application of BeiDou positioning technology in railway freight trains for the first time over more than two years of research. It has enabled real-time positioning of freight trains and accurate calculation of milage under powerless condition. A GIS map for all railway routes of China Energy was drawn, and a platform?for real-time comprehensive operation and management of freight trains based on BeiDou navigating system was built.

At present, software and hardware systems for the program including the self-powered BeiDou navigating terminals are highly reliable and efficient. All core components of the equipment use domestically-produced parts and chips, which meet applicable safety requirements. Autonomous encryption algorithm is adopted in data transmission. All data are switched in via a private APN network, meeting related requirements on data security. Data handled by the program have been used to serve the operation and management of freight trains, smart maintenance of heavy-haul freight trains, management of technical inspection for trains and cost accounting among other daily production and operation work.
