ISA CTEEP pioneers the use of drones to remove and incinerate objects on power transmission lines
São Paulo, August 2, 2021 - As part of the company's digitalization process, ISA CTEEP, the country's largest private energy transmission company, developed, in partnership with Drone Power and in a pioneering way in Brazil, a drone that incinerates objects that fall on the transmission lines and can affect the supply of electricity to society, such as balloons and kites. With it, it will not always be necessary to interrupt the energy supply, in addition to reducing the time to remove the object by more than 80%, bringing more safety to employees who perform system maintenance. The technology was approved today by the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) and starts to be used this week.
The drone, adapted with a remotely controlled system, has an attached device, which with a quick and directed blow, manages to incinerate the objects.

'The development of this solution represents a gain in terms of work safety and efficiency. With this drone, we have reduced the need for maintenance teams to call in, in addition to avoiding, in many cases, the need to disconnect the transmission line to perform services', explains Gabriela Desiré, executive officer of operations at ISA CTEEP.
The prototype development involved a series of tests, carried out by ISA CTEEP, and performed in a controlled environment. The objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of all the equipment, as well as its airworthiness.
The project was developed through the Technological Research and Development Program (R&D), regulated by the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL), and is part of the company's Maintenance Productivity Innovation Program. Since last year, the company has intensified the use of drones in its activities, optimizing the inspection of assets, tracks and substations, with more efficiency, safety and environmental gains. In 2020 alone, the company invested around R$ 14.2 million in innovation projects.

Drones: more sustainability, safety and efficiency

Drone used in tower inspections

In line with the advance of digitalization in operating processes, ISA CTEEP has intensified the use of drones in recent years, optimizing the inspection of assets, easements and substations, which provides more efficiency, safety and environmental gains.
In the construction of new transmission lines, the technology is used to lay cables, reducing the need to remove trees, while improving topography analysis to optimize the layout of new lines, avoiding interference with vegetation. Thus, due to the lesser impact on the environment, the use of drones can dismiss or speed up the environmental licensing stage.
During the inspection work of easements, the technology, for example, significantly increases the accuracy of the need for pruning trees close to transmission lines, as it allows an accurate photograph of the interference of high vegetation on assets, which can cause disconnection of the lines.

The company is also a pioneer in the market by having a Digital Image Analysis Center (CAID), a new concept and architecture for the digitalization of aerial inspection activities of assets carried out by drones. In addition to increasing safety, replacing the escalation of technical teams in towers, the initiative provides efficiency gains. With the digitization of 15% of the inspections carried out in 2020, it was possible to record productivity gains of more than 50% compared to the manual process. In 2021, more than half of transmission tower inspections will be performed digitally. The company made the contribution to the R&D, in the year, about R$ 2.4 million.

About ISA CTEEP
With a staff comprising around 1,400 employees, ISA CTEEP, which belongs to the multi-Latin ISA group, is present in 17 Brazilian states, operating a complex transmission network, responsible for the flowing of 33% of all electricity consumed in the country, and 94% of the State of São Paulo. Its electric system comprises over 20 thousand kilometers of transmission lines and 140 substations (in operation and under construction). It was privatized in 2006, and its main controlling shareholder is the multi-Latin ISA Group, holding 35.82% of the total capital.
