DAIRY FARM MAKES NEW COMMITMENTS TO IMPROVING

WELFARE OF LAYING HENS

  • Dairy Farm to launch new Meadows Cage Free Eggs in Hong Kong and Singapore in 2021
  • IKEA commits to going Cage Free in IKEA restaurants in Taiwan and Hong Kong in 2021

9th October 2020 - Dairy Farm is committed to improving the lives of hundreds and thousands of laying hens across Asia. Since earlier this year we have been building a roadmap which will lead to meaningful improvements for the welfare of laying hens.

To help our customers understand the benefits of cage free eggs we are investing in and launching a new value range of cage free eggs under our Meadows Brand in Hong Kong and Singapore in 2021. We are also introducing cage free eggs into all 10 of our IKEA restaurants in 2021 in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Our new cage free Meadows range will be sold across supermarkets, hypermarkets as well as upscale, and in all our grocery retail banners in Hong Kong and Singapore, giving our customers, wherever they shop, the opportunity to switch to cage free without fear of big price jumps. These cage free eggs will be sold in Wellcome, Market Place, Giant, Cold Storage from Q2 2021.

IKEA is also making a commitment to serve cage free eggs in our 10 restaurants by the end of 2021 in Taiwan and Hong Kong and are already working with local, and international suppliers, to meet the demand in this tight time frame.

We believe that the path to supporting greater change and improvement in the conditions of laying hens is by helping our customers recognise the clear benefits that come with a more ethically sourced egg. We want to play our part in helping to drive demand of cage free eggs, which is why we have created this new Meadows range, priced 20% lower than the average cage free national brands, thereby giving our customers the choice and incentive to switch from caged to cage free. This in turn will give suppliers the confidence to support more cage free demand and make the switch to cage free production.

As a responsible retailer we are actively looking to support the suppliers who want to make the shift to cage free, and to making sure our suppliers understand and recognized the appropriate certified cage free standards. We are committed to building long term supplier partnerships, as the industry looks to evolve to support higher standards of animal welfare and more cage free supply.

Mr. Ian McLeod, Dairy Farm CEO said, "These two initiatives demonstrates our commitment to helping change the supply chain for the better for laying hens. By creating demand from customers across Asia for cage free eggs at reasonable prices, and with our earlier commitment to have Own Brand cage free in Upscale by 2028, we are on our way to improving the lives of 600,000 laying hens."

Julie Janovsky, Vice President of Farm Animals at Humane Society International commented on the progress Dairy Farm is making. "We applaud Dairy Farm for its commitment to transition its Meadows Brand eggs in Hong Kong and Singapore to cage-free,and to source only cage free eggs for its 10 IKEA restaurants in Hong Kong and Taiwan by the end of 2021. Humane Society International looks forward to working with Dairy Farm to implement these important commitments, which will help ensure a better life and higher welfare for more than 600,000 hens."
