At St Laurence's College in South Brisbane Australia, the protection of school management records has long been a top concern for administrators.

After witnessing the worldwide spread of cybersecurity breeches at institutions of higher learning, administrators recently took action to modernize the school's data infrastructure, specifically its data protection, backup and recovery operations. After a review of industry stalwarts, St Laurence's College turned to longtime partner Dell Technologies.

It was the simplicity, stability, total cost of ownership and data reduction provided by the PowerProtect portfolio that just outclassed the rest." Nick Lieschke, IT Director, St Laurence's College

St Laurence's installation spanned multiple products in the Dell data protection portfolio, including Dell PowerProtect DP series appliances, Dell APEX Backup Services, and Avamar, which is included in Dell Data Protection Suite.

The results exceeded expectations, with a 51:1 deduplication ratio and, with Avamar, significantly less management time spent by system admins. As a whole, Lieschke estimates the new system will reduce the department's costs by $50,000 to $100,000 over a 5-year period.

In addition to Avamar, the college also used APEX Backup Service to protect its IT environment. As a SaaS-based cloud offering, APEX Backup Service enabled the team to simplify their operations and easily pick and choose various Microsoft 365 workloads to protect, according to Lieschke.

Implementation was streamlined through Dell ProDeploy services and the ProDeploy Enterprise Suite, which received a grade of A+ from St Laurence's College.
