America's education system is at risk of missing huge opportunities to leverage broadband and digital technologies, according to a Washington Post editorial this morning co-written by Erik Garr, partner with Diamond Management & Technology Consultants, Inc. (NASDAQ: DTPI).

Garr and his co-author, Blair Levin, a senior fellow at the Aspen Institute, expressed the belief that debates concerning issues in our nation's education system typically miss a critical question: Why are we still using ink-on-paper textbooks, when digital technology offers a much better way?

Both Garr and Levin led the team at the Federal Communications Commission that developed and prepared the National Broadband Plan presented to Congress earlier this year. They note in today's editorial that public discussion of broadband should focus on how to use networks and rethink how we deliver key services, rather than debates focused on how America's networks compare with those in other countries.

?And it's not just education,? Garr and Levin wrote in the copyrighted Washington Post article. ?Broadband networks can create whole new ecosystems for health care, such as through remote, in-home monitoring that will improve patient well-being while lowering costs. In public safety, emergency alerts delivered through mobile devices can be far more targeted and effective than many current practices in providing critical information in a disaster.?

The authors argue in the editorial that the future competitiveness of our country will depend on our ability to aggressively develop new categories of content?for education and other sectors?that are delivered specifically through high-speed Internet access.
