ENCE Energía y Celulosa S A : The sustainability of Magnon Mérida’s biomass is once again validated by the Sure certification

The plant of Magnon Green Energy, the Ence Group's renewable energy subsidiary, located in Mérida has renewed the Sure certificate, initially awarded in 2021, which guarantees the sustainability of the biomass consumed at this facility.
Magnon Mérida was the first plant in Europe to endorse the sustainability of its biomass through this scheme. The Sure certificate is one of the tools developed to ensure compliance with the requirements of the Renewable Energy Directive (EU) 2018/2001 (REDII), a European regulation that establishes various criteria that all biomasses used in the bioenergy sector must meet, focused on guaranteeing their sustainability, a correct mass balance, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and energy efficiency.
In this way, the Extremadura plant was able to anticipate compliance with the requirements set out in the RED II Directive, developed in Spain in the Royal Decree of transposition 376/2022, of 17 May.
For Magnon, the sustainability of its activity is the central pillar of its management. The company is at the forefront of the sustainability of biomass as a renewable energy source, being the only one of its kind to be manageable, i.e. to be able to adapt to the energy needs of the electricity mix in real time.
The Mérida plant generates renewable energy from agricultural and forestry biomass from the Extremadura area, giving a new life to this waste which can otherwise pose an environmental problem in Extremadura's countryside, due to the uncontrolled burning that sometimes occurs. Furthermore, its activity positively benefits the local economy as, with an installed capacity of 20MW, it manages to generate 500 direct, indirect and induced jobs in the area, according to data provided by the Association of Renewable Energy Companies (APPA).
