New apartments with modern touches typically only available in custom homes are coming to the Lacey area starting next week.

Harbor Custom Development Inc. (Nasdaq: HCDI) is now leasing sparkling new apartments off of Martin Way East, close to Winco Foods near Lacey. The property-development company known for building custom houses has transitioned into developing multi-use family properties. Harbor's custom-home building roots are applied to its multi-family developments on a larger scale.

The company has developed multi-family properties locally through the leasing stage in Tacoma, Yelm, Belfair and now Thurston County.

The new apartment complex named Meadowscape Apartment Homes will have 177 units for lease. At the center of the new community will be a clubhouse complete with workout facilities, a pool, and leisure space. The sprawling buildings wrap around what Jennifer Lang, vice president of marketing for Harbor Custom Development, said is a "highlight of the property design." She said, "I love the way the complex has been designed around the play structure so families can watch their kids play from their balcony or patio." At the heart of the new apartment community is a play structure and a lengthy dog run.

Meadowscape is made up of four different types of apartment units:

450 sq. ft. studio leasing for $1,550 per month
728 sq. ft. one-bedroom leasing for $1,878 per month
966 sq. ft. two-bedroom, one-bath leasing for $2,000 per month
1,122 sq. ft. two-bedroom, two-bath leasing for $2,300 per month

Sprawling apartment complexes have been built for decades, but it is the luxury finishes that Harbor Custom Development puts into their properties that the company believes sets them apart. The studio apartment is a good example. Even the studios have full-size stainless steel appliances, quartz countertops, and washer & dryer. Lang said of the concept, "The key is we aren't building luxury high rises. We are building luxury finishes for communities."

Mackenzie Gentry, a leasing consultant with property manager Cushman & Wakefield, gave The JOLT a tour of the apartments for lease. Gentry showed off a handy large storage space off the patio of a one-bedroom unit. She herself moved from Virginia to take the job with Cushman & Wakefield. "A lot of people applying are from out of state." Gentry said, adding, "We accept all applications, we encourage people to apply."

Meadowscape's location offers easy access to Joint Base Lewis McChord and the Hawks Prairie area. The complex has some garages and carports for lease, but Gentry said, "Those are first come first serve."

Meadowscape offices are open to the public and accepting applications. Move-in for the first tenants starts tomorrow, September 1. Leasing offices can be reached at 253-579-0787.

Completion of the entire project is planned for November. There is a ribbon-cutting ceremony next Thursday, September 4 at 6 p.m., and a grand opening event on Friday, September 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
