BODENHEIM (dpa-AFX) - People in Germany again drank around one bottle of wine less per person in the last financial year than in the same period of the previous year. This was reported by the German Wine Institute (DWI) in Bodenheim, Rheinhessen, on Wednesday. According to the statistics, wine consumption fell from 19.9 to 19.2 liters per person compared to the same period in the previous year.

The data is based on the so-called wine consumption balance. According to the DWI, this reflects wine purchases from retailers and producers as well as the amount of wine consumed outside the home. The past wine year ran from August 2022 to the end of July 2023.

Converted to people over the age of 16 - the age at which wine can be drunk - the statistics show that a whole liter of wine was consumed less: 22.5 liters instead of 23.6 liters in the same period last year. The decline in wine consumption reflects both changing consumer behavior and demographic change, said DWI Managing Director Monika Reule.

Per capita consumption of sparkling wine, on the other hand, remained constant at 3.2 liters in relation to the total population and 3.8 liters per person over the age of 16./irs/DP/mis
