Impala Rustenburg launches solar hybrid system at Siesta Single Quarters

23 September 2021 - Impala Rustenburg has launched one of its first solar projects at the Siesta Single Quarters in Rustenburg. The Siesta complex, situated on a six-hectare property, consists of 184 accommodation units, five conference rooms, a kitchen and dining area and offices. The first phase of Impala's solar project has successfully moved approximately half of the Siesta facilities off the local power grid and they are now powered by the electricity produced by the solar hybrid system.

Mark Munroe, Chief Executive at Impala Rustenburg said, "We are exceptionally proud to launch this project - both because it is a first for Impala, and because of the bigger picture of contributing to environmental sustainability. While we anticipate that this investment will have a positive long-term impact from a financial point of view as well as reducing Siesta's dependence on the local power grid, this project is also about doing the right thing by reducing our carbon footprint."

The solar hybrid system, which consists of 485 X JA535watt solar panels doubling as carports in the parking area, can generate 251kW of power. Over the next few months, outputs from the system will be closely monitored and analysed to determine whether a second phase is required. The end goal is to move the entire Siesta complex off the grid, with plans to increase capacity to produce additional power which can be fed back to the municipality to support the power needs of neighboring communities. Additional solar projects are planned for several of Impala's shafts, starting with 16 Shaft.

Munroe said: "As a Company, and as an industry, we have a responsibility to plan for the future, act to become even better corporate citizens and proactively reduce our carbon footprint. Moving Siesta onto solar power is the first step to going green and embracing the mindset needed to ensure we operate with greater environmental sustainability in mind."
