• This is the first digital substation with 4.0 features in Brazil and ISA companies, bringing the company to the forefront of technological innovation in substation control, protection, and telecommunications systems.
  • It is installed at the Jaguariúna substation and is equipped with state-of-the-art technology such as the Internet of Things (IoT), big data analysis, and advanced automation to improve operational efficiency and optimize energy transmission systems.
  • The technology to be used in the substation will be spread in the coming years to other countries where ISA operates.

ISA, through its company ISA CTEEP, energy transmission leader in Brazil, inaugurated in August the first 4.0 transmission substation in Latin America's largest economy.
The Jaguariúna substation, located in the State of São Paulo, is the first to incorporate state-of-the-art technology in its control and protection systems with Internet of Things (IoT) technology, real-time big data analysis, and advanced automation to enable operational improvements such as reduced energy losses, improved grid reliability, and lower operating costs.

The Jaguariúna 4.0 substation has become a milestone for the improvement of the energy service in the state of São Paulo, reducing outage times and increasing the reliability of the system. The implementation of this technology puts ISA at the forefront of these developments, setting an example for the modernization of the electrical infrastructure in Colombia and the other countries in which it operates.

"The construction of the 4.0 substation is among the new technologies being developed to increase the security and reliability of supply in view of the current transformations in the energy sector, integrating renewable sources, increasing the resilience of the network, and improving the service to society," Juan Emilio Posada, ISA's CEO, said.

Unlike conventional substations, which require dozens of panels for storing protection, automation, and control equipment connected by kilometers of copper cables operating analogically and manually, in a 4.0 substation all systems operate through a single unified digital platform, thus saving up to 50% of the physical space taken up by the systems in the substation while reducing copper cable consumption and energy losses, as copper cables are replaced by fiber optics.

Jaguariúna has been equipped with a high-performance computer platform for live monitoring of the main indicators during operations. These include sensors connected to each other through fiber optics, WiFi and IoT technologies, which allow remote monitoring of the substation systems at all times.

This development, supported by Hitachi Energy and the Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo, consolidates features already present in other stations of ISA and its companies.

Other innovation features in ISA's and its companies' substations:

In Peru, the Socabaya and Campas substations, already in operation, have been developed based on digital information criteria through the implementation of the Process Bus, an innovative data transport system that allows the different areas of a substation to communicate with each other and coordinate their operation through a dedicated communication channel. In Colombia, the renovation of the Betania substation and the new design of the Carrieles substation using this technology are in the design phase and expected to come into operation in 2025; in Chile, the system is planned to be incorporated into the Nueva Lagunas substation in 2026.

In addition to the substations that are already energized or in design phases, all calls or tenders in which ISA participates consider the implementation of digital substations using this technology. The company's goal is to increase the digitization of control, protection, and telecommunications systems in future projects.
