Keppel Corporation has pledged to plant 10,000 trees in Singapore over the next five years, in support of NParks' One Million Trees movement.

Keppel Care Foundation, the group's philanthropic arm, will be donating $3 million to the Garden City Fund to support the planting of 10,000 trees over the next five years in parks and nature reserves in Singapore. This is the single largest donation pledged for tree planting in Singapore to date.

The One Million Trees movement was symbolically launched by the then Second Minister and current Minister for National Development, Mr Desmond Lee, in April 2020.

On 1 August 2020, Mr Lee led a tree planting exercise at Kranji Coastal Nature Park as part of efforts to reinvigorate the One Million Trees movement. At the tree planting session, Mr Loh Chin Hua, CEO of Keppel Corporation, planted a Palaquium obovatum, one of the species that is representative of the various coastal and back mangrove plants that will be selected to restore the habitat on site.

Mr Loh said, 'As a company providing solutions for sustainable urbanisation, Keppel views sustainability as central to our strategy. We are committed to environmental stewardship and are glad to contribute towards climate action through tree-planting, which is a nature-based solution to fight climate change.

'Keppel staff have been volunteering regularly for conservation programmes such as tree planting and beach clean-ups, in Singapore and overseas. Through our commitment to plant 10,000 trees, we hope to further strengthen our focus on addressing the challenges of climate change and bring together more in our community to contribute to a greener and more sustainable Singapore for future generations.'

Mr Kenneth Er, CEO of NParks, said, 'The collaboration between NParks and Keppel will go a long way in restoring nature back into our urban landscape, as we intensify our greening efforts and strengthen ecological connectivity. We thank Keppel for partnering us in our efforts to ensure that Singapore continues to be a distinctive and highly liveable city. We hope thatmore corporations and individuals will step forward to support Singapore's transformation into a City in Nature through the One Million Trees movement.'

The Keppel Group has been a longstanding supporter of environmental conservation programmes. Keppel has also collaborated with NParks to restore a freshwater wetland habitat at Singapore Botanic Gardens - the Keppel Discovery Wetlands. Since its launch in March 2017, the Learning Forest, which Keppel Discovery Wetlands is a part of, has received some 1.1 million visitors. Keppel employees have also been volunteering regularly as Green Ambassadors, providing bi-weekly guided tours of the Learning Forest for members of the public.
