Kyushu Railway Company (Representative Director, President and Executive Officer: Yoji Furumiya, hereinafter referred to as 'JR Kyushu'), Sumitomo Corporation (Representative Director, President and Executive Officer: Masayuki Hyodo, hereinafter referred to as 'Sumitomo Corporation'), Sumitomo Corporation Kyushu Stock Denki no Eki LLC (executive officers: Hiroki Kono and Keita Kojima, hereinafter referred to as 'Denki no Eki') was established with investment from the company (President and Executive Officer: Kazuyuki Takahashi, hereinafter referred to as 'Sumitomo Corporation Kyushu'). ) has completed construction of its first project, Denki no Eki Kawajiri, in Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture.

After conducting various tests in preparation for full-scale operation of the facility, we will enter the supply and demand adjustment market (1) and capacity market (2) as grid storage batteries.

Denki Station Business Contents

In order to achieve carbon neutrality in 2050, it is essential to stabilize and upgrade the power network to the next generation in anticipation of the large-scale introduction of renewable energy (hereinafter referred to as 'renewable energy'). With renewable energy, the amount of power generated varies greatly depending on natural conditions such as sunlight and wind, which can make it difficult to provide a stable supply of electricity. Under these circumstances, the role of grid storage batteries, which adjust the supply and demand balance in the power grid, has become important as a key solution to the spread and expansion of renewable energy. This role is particularly important in the Kyushu region, where a large amount of renewable energy, mainly solar power generation, has been introduced.

At Denki Station, we will effectively utilize land along railway lines and idle land managed by JR Kyushu, and utilize JR Kyushu's maintenance management know-how and the Sumitomo Corporation Group's power storage business know-how to carry out power storage business for the grid.

About 'Denki no Eki Kawajiri'

At 'Denki no Eki Kawajiri,' we have built a 'Battery Station' system specially designed to match the unique land shape of the area along the railway line. In addition, the storage battery system is designed to have high economic value so that it can reuse EV batteries provided by 4R Energy Co., Ltd., a joint venture between Sumitomo Corporation and Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., for stationary use (for power business use). We have adopted an 'EV battery station' that has become a 'EV battery station.'

Future business development

JR Kyushu, Sumitomo Corporation, and Sumitomo Corporation Kyushu signed a partnership agreement with Kumamoto City on February 7, 2024 to achieve carbon neutrality. Starting with 'Denki no Eki Kawajiri,' we will expand our business in Kumamoto City, while leveraging JR Kyushu's network and the Sumitomo Corporation Group's know-how in the energy storage business to develop land along railway lines and idle land throughout the Kyushu area. We will continue to expand our business. Furthermore, we plan to use Denki Station as a platform to consider regional energy services that provide safety and security to the region, such as by releasing power from storage batteries in the event of a disaster.
