Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) was named the winner of the Main Event of the Year in Russian Metallurgy competition at an award ceremony that took place as part of the 29th Metal Expo International Industrial Exhibition in Moscow. The Company was recognised for the implementation of the first stage of its project to carry out a comprehensive reconstruction of its coke and chemical production.

The award was presented to MMK's Deputy General Director for Sales Sergey Ushakov by Viktor Yevtukhov, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation.

The large-scale modernisation of coke production at MMK includes the construction of a modern, environmentally friendly coke battery, which will replace five existing ones. The new coke battery will have a production capacity of 2.5 million tonnes of dry coke per year, which covers nearly half of the Company's coke demand. The first phase of the project includes two battery units (there will be four in total), a dry coke quenching unit, a coal tower, a coal preparation unit, a desulphurisation and denitrification system, and other related facilities.

Beyond its impact on production, the implementation of this large-scale investment project has major environmental significance for MMK and the city of Magnitogorsk. With the battery reaching full capacity, gross emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere will be reduced by 11.35 thousand tonnes per year.

This project, alongside other environmental protection measures at MMK, will enable the Company to drastically reduce the impact of its production activities on the environment and meet the environmental objectives put in place as part of the federal Clean Air project. As a result, the air quality in Magnitogorsk - which has improved on a yearly basis thanks to MMK's efforts - will be brought to a fundamentally new level.

About the competition
