Marsh & McLennan Cos. Inc. recorded higher earnings year over year in the fourth quarter as revenue growth improved in the company's risk and consulting businesses.

The insurance and advisory company logged earnings of $1.57 a share, a rise from 73 cents a share in the year-ago quarter. Net income was $803 million, up from $374 million 12 months earlier.

Adjusted earnings were $1.36 a share. Analysts polled by FactSet had forecast adjusted earnings of $1.34 a share.

Revenue climbed to $5.14 billion, from $4.42 billion in 2020's fourth quarter. Analysts were forecasting revenue of $4.92 billion.

Risk and insurance revenue climbed 20% year over year, to $3 billion. Consulting revenue was up by 10%, at $2.1 billion.

The company's Oliver Wyman Group consulting arm and its Marsh insurance and risk business were the fastest growing segments in the quarter, with revenue from both increasing 22% year over year.
