 Created under the supervision of P.A.Soloviev PS-90A Engine is one of the most important achievements of Russian aviation industry. According to a specified level of thermodynamic and specific parameters it complied with scientific and technical requirements of 1990s and was highly competitive in basic specifications and operational process parameters with the best foreign prototypes, which were under development in 80s and entered service in 90s.

From the very beginning PS-90A Engine was developed as a commonality based engine to power IL-96 and TU-204 Aircrafts, and also as a basic engine with intention to create some variants for a wide operational range. High requirements were realised in a new basic design of two-shaft, by-pass, mixed flow engine with a high performance core. The implementation of electronic-digital controlling method helped to optimize the engine control, providing excellent thrust and efficiency properties in a wide range of flying speed and altitude.

Over 20 years Perm Design Bureau has designed and implemented in serial production the following modifications: PS-90À-76, PS-90À1, PS-90À2. Currently there are 345 PS-90A Family engines available in Russian and foreign airlines, aircraft building companies and leasing companies. Their total running time from the beginning of service has exceeded 3.3 mln hours.

Engines are being operated 'on-condition', without restriction in time between overhaul and assigned life in hours. Engines total running time without shop visits is as follows:

  • PS90A - 9989 hours / 2129 cycles;
  • PS90A-76 - 10669 hours / 2897 cycles;

PS-90A Family engines become common use on the following line aircrafts:

  • passenger aviation - IL-96-300, TU-204-100/300/300À/ÑÌ, TU-214;
  • cargo aviation - IL-96-400Ò, IL-76TD-90, TU-204Ñ/ÑÅ;
  • military transport aviation - IL-76MD-90/À, IL-76MF, IL-76MF-EI;
  • combat support aviation - À-50 AEW, TU-214ON, TU-214SR, TU-214SUS;
  • special flight detachment aviation - IL-96-300PU, TU-214PU.

Aircraft fleet powered with the PS-90A family engines has 97 aircrafts, 26 of which are cargo and military transport aircrafts. «Aeroflot», «Transaero», «Vladivostok Avia», Red Wings, «Volga-Dnepr», «Polet», Cubana, Silk Way Airlines, Air Koryo and others are among Russian and foreign airlines having the PS-90A family powered aircrafts in service. PS-90A family engines power the aircrafts of the Russian President and Prime Minister.

In early 90s Aeroflot Company, the first operator of PS-90A Engine, has shared with the engine developers the responsibility in the engine development and certification. Say the least of kind of it, the engine would not exist without Aeroflot support. We are proud that over those 20 years PS-90A engine saved face of Perm design technology «school» of aero-engine building and is worth of the best line aircrafts of the Iliushin and Tupolev companies.
