Ethernet forms the backbone of most enterprise data centers, and it has proven itself as a flexible, robust solution to a general-purpose problem. Within the rack, there are better solutions, and ExpressFabric®, built on PCI Express, is gaining interest as a fabric for this purpose. Since virtually every component within the rack has a PCIe connection, the system designer can dramatically reduce cost and power by eliminating the network interface cards that are necessary for an Ethernet-based solution. One important aspect of any Ethernet replacement is the ability to integrate seamlessly into the existing infrastructure, and ExpressFabric allows standard Ethernet applications to run without change.
ExpressFabric also enables the acceleration of applications through an approach that adds remote direct memory access (RDMA) to the mix, again without needing an external host card adapter or using the standard applications that make use of RDMA. Chisvin's presentation, which is part of the Ethernet Technology Summit's Increasing Network Performance session (Data Center Track), will explain how this PCIe approach operates and can be applied to mainstream applications, as well as to systems managing diverse data types, such as storage and communications.
The Ethernet Technology Conference runs April 29 through May 1. The annual event draws system designers, IT managers, press, analysts, and venture-capital experts from around the world to its seminars, forums, keynotes, and sessions covering the latest developments and trends in Ethernet, data centers, convergence, and the Internet of Things.
