Potash of Saskatchewan : PotashCorp helps put healthy lunches in the bag for Regina kids

Regina, Saskatchewan - No school means no homework, no studying and, for some kids, no access to a healthy lunch or snack.

But PotashCorp REACH into the Parks and PotashCorp Food on the Move are filling the gap again this summer. During July and August, children can pick up lunch at several PlayEscapes sites throughout the city, while morning or afternoon snacks are available at additional locations. The programs are funded by PotashCorp.

Since 2012, PotashCorp has provided nearly $600,000 for initiatives in Regina that help provide nutritious food for children and youth in need.

'Many students rely on school nutrition programs and these programs are designed to ensure they have nutritional food throughout the summer months as well,' said Rhonda Speiss, PotashCorp's Manager of Community Investment. 'And as a company that helps farmers feed our growing world, we are proud to play a role in ensuring that kids in Regina have access to the food they need, year round.'

'The PotashCorp REACH into the Parks summer lunch program is feeding children who may not have a lunch in the summer. This program is critical for the health of Regina's most at-risk children and for the overall health of our community. Feeding these children is building a better community. We are grateful for PotashCorp as we could not have such a successful program without them,' said Dana Folkerson, Executive Director of REACH.

'This PotashCorp Food on the Move program fills the summer nutrition gap for children who rely on the lunch programs provided by the schools. With the continued support of PotashCorp, this initiative provides nutritious lunches daily Monday thru Friday at pools and locations known to attract children in need. We are confident and encouraged that what we are contributing through this ministry is reaching farther into the community than anyone realizes,' said Val Wiks, Community Ministries Coordinator of the Salvation Army.

Lunches include a sandwich with home roasted meats, cheese, and a fresh fruit or vegetable. As dietary needs have evolved, so have the lunches. For kids that need one, a gluten-free option is available. Requests for a vegetarian lunch are also accommodated.
