Miguel Jiménez is named managing editor of EL PAÍS.
José Antonio Vega (Gáname de Sayago, Zamora, 1962) has been appointed editor-in-chief of CincoDías, Spain's veteran business and finance newspaper. Vega has a degree in Information Sciences from the Complutense University of Madrid. He began his professional career at the Diario ABC in Madrid in 1984 and subsequently joined CincoDías in 1986 as news editor for labor and Social Security affairs. In 1996 he was appointed section editor for the Economics and International Economics section, from where he oversaw the newspaper's coverage of Spain's adoption of the euro. In 2006, he was appointed deputy chief editor of the newspaper, with responsibility for both the print and digital editions. Since 2018 he had been been managing editor. He has published a wide range of articles and opinion pieces on Spanish economic policy in recent decades, especially on the successful transition from the peseta to the euro and on the subsequent Great Recession, as well as on their impact on economic activity, employment, fiscal policy and the welfare state.
Vega replaces Miguel Jiménez, who has been appointed managing editor of EL PAÍS. In his farewell speech, Jiménez paid tribute to the hard work of the editorial staff, whom he thanked for ensuring that all the goals he had set for the newspaper two years ago had been met: robust growth in circulation and readership, a higher profile for the daily paper and a notable improvement in revenue despite the coronavirus crisis. Both CincoDías and EL PAÍS Economía have enjoyed sustained growth in digital audiences over the past two years and have, together, reached a record seven million unique users in 2020. Jiménez foresees a bright future for CincoDías and has promised to continue supporting and collaborating with the newspaper from his new position at EL PAÍS - and thereby ensure that it continues to set the gold standard for news on business and the economy.
