Rosseti FGC UES is investing over 3.7 bn rubles to upgrade the 220 kV Nagornaya substation in the Nizhni Novgorod region. It is planned to replace 100% of its switching equipment and two autotransformers for a total capacity of 400 MVA. The project will improve the reliability of power supplies in the south-east of Nizhni Novgorod, Bogorodsky and Kstovsky districts of the region, with about 400,000 people an over 200 big enterprises.

The substation will be equipped with a 220 kV gas-insulated switch (GIS). This highly reliable equipment, placed in enclosed chambers, is controlled automatically and needs no continuous attendance. Besides, the GIS is provided with self-testing an gaseous fire-extinguishing systems.

The 110 kV switchyard will be fully redesigned. Gas-insulated switching equipment, current and voltage instrument transformers will be mounted there. It is also planned to build a new 10 kV indoor switchgear.

There are three power autotransformers at the substation, each with 200 MVA capacity, and two of them will be replaced in the course of this project. The power center will be equipped with state-of-the-art microprocessor-based relay protection systems, automated control and power metering systems, and security CCTV.

The works will be conducted in stages, without limiting the supply of power to consumers. The upgrade will be fully completed in 2025.
