Raspadskaya Coal Company has opened an ecological polygon in Mezhdurechensk

15 June 2023 - Raspadskaya Coal Company (RCC) has launched an event called "Kuzbass Grows with Forests". Coal miners have created a unique ecological polygon with the total area of 4 hectares at the Raspadsky surface mine. The ecologists of the company plan to plant 13 different species of trees there. Among them there are pine, spruce, linden, larch and others.

The aim is to work out an accelerated technology of disturbed lands rehabilitation with a variety of species composition of vegetation.

In total, the coal miners will plant more than 6 thousand saplings in two stages on the 10 experimental plots of the waste dump. The first plantings were already held last week.

Environmentalists and scientists will complete the planting during 2023. Then they will work on technical solutions for selecting the composition of soil-soils using rocks and oxidized coals. They plan to carry out scientific work at the ecological polygon until 2027 with annual monitoring of the plants' survival rate. It is also planned to assess the possibility of CO2 uptake by young soils and plants.

Raspadskaya Coal Company is working together with scientists from Siberian State Industrial University, Federal Coal and Coal Chemistry Research Center of Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences, Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry of Russian Academy of Sciences, as well as Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys to create an ecopolygon.
