Coffee-and-doughnut chain Tim Hortons on Tuesday said it is rolling out paper straws in its 4,000 restaurants in Canada following the government's recent ban on single-use plastic straws.

The Restaurant Brands International Inc. unit said it expects to complete the transition to paper straws by early 2021, adding that the move would eliminate about 300 million plastic straws from its Canadian restaurants over the next year.

Canada's government last week said it would ban several single-use plastics, including straws, stir sticks, bags and cutlery, by the end of 2021.

Tim Hortons last year ended the use of plastic stir sticks, eliminating 168 million pieces of plastic a year. The chain already limits the use of plastic bags to bulk orders, and it is working to end their use in all restaurants next year.
