Strategic IT Decisions Lead to Business Enablement for Riverbed

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, Sep 21, 2011 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) --

Riverbed Technology (NASDAQ: RVBD), the IT performance company, today announced that it has been selected for this year's InformationWeek 500, an annual listing of the nation's most innovative users of business technology. Riverbed(R) was selected for the listing based on its innovation in streamlining operations, as well as its successful entry into two new markets -- public cloud and cloud storage. The 2011 list was revealed at a gala awards ceremony last week at the exclusive InformationWeek 500 Conference that took place at the St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort in Dana Point, CA.

"We continue to shape our IT strategy to support the need for real-time collaboration and data access for the company's globally distributed workforce," said Thomas Bakewell, chief information officer, Riverbed. "Our innovative and strategic approaches to IT have provided the company with new levels of business agility, productivity and customer service through technology solutions that support business priorities while giving us flexibility for the future. These strategic decisions should position Riverbed for continued success."

The advent of cloud computing offers new choices in how to architect IT infrastructures for the best possible combination of performance, availability, cost and control. A critical requirement is the ability to integrate public and private services with optimized connectivity to build a flexible hybrid cloud environment. To enable organizations to overcome the performance challenges in public cloud environments, Riverbed developed a comprehensive range of high-performance solutions in 2010 that enable businesses to utilize public and private cloud infrastructure with no negative impact to the end user. Cloud Steelhead(TM) extends Riverbed's market-leading wide area network (WAN) optimization portfolio with a solution purpose-built for public cloud computing environments. Whitewater(R) makes public cloud storage a compelling option for backup and archiving. Both Cloud Steelhead and Whitewater allow organizations to securely accelerate applications and backup data sets while simplifying management, spanning delivery from the public cloud, to the data center, to the branch, and to users anywhere.

During the development of Cloud Steelhead and Whitewater, the Riverbed IT organization collaborated with engineering teams to test both products. This collaboration led to the joint development of a cloud portal for customers to retrieve license keys and ensure seamless integration with public cloud environments. To augment Riverbed's own disaster recovery (DR) strategy, the Riverbed IT organization deployed Whitewater to move the company's backup data into a public cloud environment. As a result, Riverbed reduced storage requirements by 8x and has improved its recovery point and recovery time objectives to enhance the company's data protection. Separately, the company further improved its manufacturing operations, allowing the company to improve worker productivity and accelerate order fulfillment times. These initiatives build on Riverbed's goal of delivering transformed business capabilities for globally connected enterprises.

More than 13,000 organizations worldwide, across a wide range of markets, depend on Riverbed to understand, optimize and consolidate their IT infrastructure. Riverbed delivers hardware, software and virtualized solutions that overcome performance issues caused by distance, distributed computing, and ever increasing amounts of data. Virtualization, consolidation and cloud computing promise huge cost savings and improved efficiencies, but as users move farther from their data, slow applications and file transfers can stall these strategic initiatives. Riverbed delivers to the remote office and mobile workers the same "local area network (LAN)-like" performance, no matter where the private data center or public cloud may be. Riverbed continues building on its success in the WAN optimization, application-aware network performance management (NPM) and data protection markets with new and innovative solutions for accelerating cloud storage and access to applications and data deployed in public, private and hybrid clouds.

"For 23 years, the InformationWeek 500 has chronicled and honored the most innovative users of business technology," said InformationWeek Editor-in-Chief Rob Preston. "In this day and age, however, being innovative is not enough. Companies and their IT organizations need to innovate faster than ever before to stay a step or two ahead of their customers, partners and competitors. This year's ranking placed special emphasis on those high-octane business technology innovators."

InformationWeek identifies and honors the nation's most innovative users of information technology with its annual 500 listing and also tracks the technology, strategies, investments and administrative practices of America's best-known companies. Top winners have included: The Vanguard Group, CME Group, Conway, National Semiconductor, Kimberly-Clark, Hilton Hotels and Unum. The InformationWeek 500 rankings are unique among corporate rankings as it spotlights the power of innovation in information technology, rather than simply identifying the biggest IT spenders.
