SAN DIEGO (AP) _ Sempra Energy (SRE) on Thursday reported third-quarter profit of $399 million.

The San Diego-based company said it had net income of $1.21 per share. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs, came to $1.31 per share.

The results fell short of Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $1.47 per share.

The natural gas and electricity provider posted revenue of $2.64 billion in the period.

Sempra expects full-year earnings in the range of $7.20 to $7.80 per share.

Sempra shares have declined 15% since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index has risen roughly 7%. The stock has fallen 12% in the last 12 months.
