PayPay Corporation, a joint venture between Softbank Group Corp., Softbank Corp. and Yahoo Japan Corporation, has announced the launch of "PayPay for Developers" as of July 29, 2020. A tool for developers that enables easy integration of "PayPay" as a payment system into their online services, such as websites and mobile apps, and makes accepting payments from millions of PayPay users in Japan, easy.

The new "PayPay for Developers" contains information for payment system developers on how to quickly integrate and enable online payment using "PayPay" by creating an API (*1) connection between "PayPay" and their own website or application. In addition to publishing the API connection and integration methods, there is also a secure development environment in which it will be possible for developers to use "PayPay" to make payments and confirm the behavior of the API connections on a real-time basis. PayPay is the first company in Japan (*2) to offer such a developer site equipped with open APIs and a development environment enabling safe, sandboxed, real-time payment testing.

Through the use of "PayPay for Developers", payment system developers in any company will be able to check the process, development and behavior of the integration of "PayPay" in advance, allowing for an even speedier integration. In addition, it will also be possible for businesses running small websites to easily implement "PayPay" for online payments through the use of the development environment and development support features provided in the "PayPay for Developers" website, and in doing so significantly reduce their developers' workload.

Features of "PayPay for Developers"

"PayPay for Developers" (*3) introduces the following 4 main integrations of "PayPay".

  • "Web Payment" feature which displays the "PayPay" payment screen and enables payments.

"Web Payment" is ideal for cases in which a developer's end-users may use multiple types of devices such as computers and smartphones to access their service. With Web Payment, the "PayPay" payment screen within the merchant's service is displayed for the end-user to complete a payment. Users accessing from their computers will be able to scan the QR code displayed on the web browser or log in to their PayPay account from within the web browser. Users accessing from their smartphones can also have their PayPay app invoked on their phone where they will be able to complete a payment.

  • "Native Payment" enables payments using a pre-linked PayPay account

"Native Payment" is a feature which involves users linking their PayPay account within the merchant's service in advance to enable payments, used with services such as "Yahoo! JAPAN Shopping" and "PayPay Mall". It simplifies the process for users by linking the account information of both the merchant's website and PayPay. PayPay also defines security requirements for the integration to ensure a secure payment system.

  • "Dynamic QR Code" which displays a dynamic QR code in any website enabling PayPay payments

"Dynamic QR Code" is a feature that dynamically displays a QR code to accept payments using "PayPay" in various use cases, such as displaying it on a tablet or TV screen. An end-user simply has to scan the code and make the payment in the same way that they do at millions of offline stores around Japan today.

  • "App Invoke" - invokes the PayPay app on an end-user's device to allow a payment

"App Invoke" calls the PayPay app on the end-user's device, taking the user from the merchant's app or website to PayPay, so that a payment can be made. This is allowing the payment flow to go through the familiar environment of the PayPay app, which is already widely used for online payments.

The website can be used for free. To integrate PayPay for online payments, it is necessary to sign up to "PayPay for Developers" in addition to submitting an application to become a PayPay merchant (*4). The production environment in which the API connections can be made will become available for use only once

the signup and application is complete.

In addition, registering with "PayPay for Developers" will provide access to multiple other features. The "PayPay Lab", for example, allows checking the API connections scenarios and code snippets in a sandbox environment. A developer's user test ID & password can be created by which the PayPay app can be tested without the use of real funds, and the "PayPay Resolve" feature will allow for any error handling that may occur when there is an API connection failure.

There are already more than 120,000 locations across the country (*5) at which "PayPay" can be used for online payments, including major enterprise merchants such as "DiDi", "Coke ON" and "Uber Eats", who provide online payments using API connections. PayPay will continue to increase the number of merchants that support online "PayPay" payments through "PayPay for Developers" to provide greater convenience to all 30 million plus PayPay users (*6).
