Carbon Neutral Technology Development Project Team to Be Launched for the Mission of Achieving Carbon

Taiheiyo Cement Corporation (Headquarters: Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo; President: Masafumi Fushihara) will launch the Carbon Neutral Technology Development Project Team on April 1, 2021, with the aim of strengthening its organization and enhancing the development and practical application of innovative technologies for CO2 capture from cement kiln exhaust gas and subsequent carbon recycling which have been in progress at the company.

One of the important keys for sustainable development of the cement industry is to create the most advantageous CO2 capture and carbon recycling technologies for cement kilns. Taiheiyo Cement has positioned the achievement of carbon neutrality as its important growth strategy and formulated specific measures to achieve its long-term vision of greenhouse gas emissions reduction toward 2050 as announced on March 30, 2020. For achieving the long-term vision, it is essentially required to develop innovative technologies and improve them to a level of feasibility, including cost-wise, in addition to application and further development of existing technologies. Having the new Carbon Neutral Technology Development Project Team at the core, Taiheiyo Cement plans to establish technologies ready for public implementation early and achieve real carbon neutrality by 2050.

As part of the technology development, a project is under way at Taiheiyo Cement for the development of carbon-recycling cement manufacturing process technologies which is subsidized by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) of Japan. We have been working on the development and demonstration of the most advantageous technology for capturing CO2 from cement kiln exhaust gas utilizing the amine method, as well as the development of carbon recycling technologies to use the captured CO2 as a feedstock in cement and construction materials.

At the same time, we will also focus on developing an innovative CO2 capture technology that takes advantage of the features of our cement manufacturing process. Such efforts will include the reduction of the size and cost of the capture equipment and the development of a novel process to enable simultaneous performance of waste/by-product treatment and

CO2 capture.

With the formation of the cross-divisional project team, Taiheiyo Cement will make a new step, sharing all of the knowledge across the entire company and enhancing innovative technology development to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality.
