Project Team" to "Carbon Neutral Technology Development Department"

Taiheiyo Cement Corporation (Head Office: Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo; President and Representative Director: Masafumi Fushihara) have been developing technologies for the capture, utilization and storage of CO2 from the cement production process, led by its Carbon Neutral Technology Development Project Team. To strengthen the framework for the further development and practical application of these innovative technologies, this project team will be become a permanent organizational department and be renamed

"Carbon Neutral Technology Development Department" as of April 1, 2024.

We consider the creation of technologies for the capture, utilization and storage of CO2 suitable for the cement production process to be the most important issue for the sustainable advancement of the cement industry. We have positioned the achievement of carbon neutrality as our important growth strategy and, accordingly, in 2020 announced "Specific Measures for the Long-Term Vision for Greenhouse Gas Emission Reductions toward 2050". Having the "Carbon Neutral Project Technology Development Project Team" at the core, we aim to quickly establish and implement technologies to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

In 2022 we were selected by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) under their "Green Innovation Fund Project" initiative to develop a CO2-capture calciner enabling efficient CO2- capture in a compact facility and associated methanation system suitable for the cement production process.

In 2023 we were also selected by the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security to conduct a feasibility study on Japanese Advanced CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage), and, specifically, have been conducting a study mainly on the separation and recovery of CO2 from the cement production process, liquefaction of the recovered CO2, and a shipping base for liquified CO2.

We have commenced studying the concept of a "Carbon Neutral Model Plant" at the Kawasaki Plant of DC CO., LTD. toward scaling up to plant demonstration level the various technologies which we have been developing to achieve carbon neutrality, to accelerate their deployment at actual cement plants.

The "Carbon Neutral Technology Development Project Team", which is the core organization for these efforts, has been made a permanent organization as the "Carbon Neutral Technology Development Department" to strongly promote the development of innovative technologies to achieve carbon neutrality.
