LOW CARBON COMMITMENT

  • Utilisation of the latest and most efficient 9HA.02 combustion turbine technology
  • A symbol of eco-friendly energy for sustainable development
  • Capacity to generate 1,440 megawatts for National Grid

Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) achieves another milestone in its low carbon commitment with the launch of an advanced gas turbine power plant in Pasir Gudang, Johor, today.

The launch was officiated by The Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar, whose pleased to name the station Sultan Ibrahim Power Plant, in conjunction with His Royal Highness' Official Birthday this year.

Sultan Ibrahim spent almost an hour at the station, the first commercial power plant in the world to use the latest and most technologically efficient 9HA.02 gas turbine produced by General Electric (GE).

Its natural gas fuel combustion technology is capable of generating more than 60 percent of electricity, an efficiency that contributes to lower carbon footprint, living up to its slogan, Eco- friendly Energy, For Sustainable Development (Tenaga Mesra Alam, Demi Pembangunan Mampan).

Also present at the launch was Tunku Mahkota Johor, Tunku Ismail Ibni Sultan Ibrahim; Johor's Chief Minister, Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi; Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan; President/Chief Executive Officer of TNB, Datuk Ir. The construction of Sultan Ibrahim Power Plant with a cost of RM 4.7 billion was a result of a joint venture between TNB and SIPP Energy Sdn Bhd, with 70 per cent and 30 per cent stake, respectively.

Sultan Ibrahim Power Plant supplies 1,440 megawatts (MW) of electricity to the National Grid through two Combined Cycle Gas Turbine power plants, each with a capacity of 720 MW since early 2021.

Sultan Ibrahim Power Plant strengthens the generation capacity in Peninsular Malaysia to 26,744.8MW and becomes one of the notable landmarks for electricity generation industry development in Johor and the southern region.

According to Takiyuddin, the station was a testament to TNB's unchanging commitment in contributing towards realising a low-carbon economy, without compromising stable electricity supply to the southern region and the entire Peninsular.

He explained that the development of the station "is in tandem with the national goal and agenda in achieving the country's Sustainability Roadmap to reach 45% Greenhouse Gas (GHG) intensity reduction by 2023."

Sultan Ibrahim Power Plant's combined cycle method to generate energy is an eco-friendly alternative technology (cleantech) that is in line with TNB's aspiration of emphasising sustainability and the harmony of nature. It is also in line with the future of sustainable energy as well as ensuring reliable and eco-friendly energy supply.

Sultan Ibrahim Power Plant was recognized as Plant of the Year 2021 by the US-based international power generation industry publication, POWER Magazine in July 2021.

It is fully operated and maintained by TNB Power Generation Sdn Bhd's (TNB Genco) subsidiary, TNB Repair and Maintenance Sdn Bhd (Remaco). TNB Genco is a wholly-owned subsidiary of TNB that develops, operates and maintains TNB's generation portfolio.
