Project WeCan Job Tasting Programme Offers Internships for

Nearly 200 Secondary School Students

Total Numbers of Beneficiary Schools and Students Reach Historic High

17 July, 2017 (Hong Kong): Project WeCanannounces the kick-off of the 6th Project WeCan Job Tasting Programme today. Offering nearly 200 internship opportunities for secondary school students this summer, the Programme aims at providing students from humble backgrounds with hands-on job experiences in sizable corporations and opportunities to explore their potentials and vocational choices. The Programme kicks start today with Stephen Ng, Chairman & Managing Director of The Wharf (Holdings) Limited and Chairman of Project WeCan Committee, meeting the fresh interns on their first day of work.

Launched in 2012, the Job Tasting Programme is one of the major programmes under Project WeCan and is probably Hong Kong¡¦s largest and most comprehensive summer internship programme for secondary students. A record high of nearly 200 students from 36 Project WeCan partner schools join the Programme this year. With support from 46 departments of 29 companies, the Programme simulates a proper job search and application process, from job posting, writing application letters, to attending interviews. Appointed students will get a taste ofworking in real life through a two- to four-week internship in different departments of participating companies.

Stephen Ng, Chairman & Managing Director of The Wharf (Holdings) Limited and Chairman of Project WeCan Committee, said, ¡§The Programme is not only a valuable learning opportunity to the students, but it also provides a platform for them to showcase their passion and creativity. My advice to students is 3Os: ¡¥Open your eyes, Open your mind and Open your heart¡¦. It is through overcoming challenges and learning with humbleness that they gain inspirational insights and broaden their horizons. I wish them all an inspiring and fulfilling summer ahead.¡¨

Beneficiary student of this year¡¦s Programme, Kenny Li from Lok Sin Tong Leung Kau Kui College, said, ¡§I want to be a western chef after graduation but am doubtful about whether it is a suitable lifelong career for me. This internship would be a perfect opportunity for me to get a taste of the industry and provide insights for my future moves. ¡¨

Mr Lin Chun Pong, Principal of Ng Yuk Secondary School with 13 students joining the Programme this summer, expressed, ¡§We would like to thank Project WeCan for offering these invaluable opportunities for our students. Internship opportunities in sizable corporations are scarce even for university undergraduates, not to mention secondary school students. Through this eye-opening experience, they are to acquire job skills, proper work attitude and understand job requirements of specific fields, getting them well prepared for their future endeavors.I hope they can seize the opportunity to learn and explore, whether pursuing higher education or entering the workforce after graduation.¡¨

With growing support from corporate partners, the job openings available this year have been diverse by industry and job nature. A total of 29companies, spanning property, property management, retail, hospitality, telecommunications, logistics, shipping, public transport, account and education etc, support the Programme this year (refer to the list below). Students can apply for their desired jobs through which they have got to understand themselves better as they pursue further studies and explore their future careers.

¡§A cumulative number of nearly 900 students from 41 WeCan schools are benefitted from 32 corporate partners since the launch of the Job Tasting Programme. We hope to further collaborate with the business sector as well as other institutions to provide support for grassroots students. We hope to get them well prepared for their future careers through realising their potentials and enhancing competitiveness,¡¨ Mr Ng added.

Other programmes in Project WeCan that help students to prepare for further moves include Career Exploration Day, annual Young Innovators Bazaar and year-round company visits and career talks.
