• Cargo traffic resumes along the section between Novi Ligure, Pozzolo Formigaro and Rivalta Scrivia
  • Rivalta Scrivia (AL) cargo station improved

Genoa, September 1, 2021 - A new section of the rail line being developed under the Terzo Valico dei Giovi - Genoa Junction Projecthas come into service today. With this new milestone, the project led by Webuild as general contractor for Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) with the support of engineering firm Italferr (Gruppo FS Italiane) under the supervision of Extraordinary Commissioner Calogero Mauceri, work on the Terzo Valico reaches approximately 55% completion.

The line between Novi Ligure, Pozzolo Formigaro and Rivalta Scrivia has resumed service following the completion of infrastructure and technology work between Pozzolo Formigaro and Rivalta Scrivia, as well as the installation of traffic management technology at Rivalta Scrivia and Novi Ligure.

With the construction of 8 kilometres of new rail and a station, cargo trains can again access Rivalta Scrivia from Novi Ligure by using the section of the future Terzo Valico dei Giovi project. Highly advanced IT systems have also been installed for the management of rail traffic at the Novi Ligure and Rivalta Scrivia stations, replacing the old systems. They consist of a sophisticated computerized central equipment system (ACC), a command centre that manages rail traffic more effectively and efficiently, especially in the event of critical issues, guaranteeing greater flexibility in the use of the line.

Important improvements were also made to the cargo terminal at Rivalta with the construction of two new lines 750 metres in length as well as new rail connections to the freight village. This opening will guarantee the Rivalta Scrivia freight village an opportunity to increase the country's competitiveness and the region's logistics capacity. It is another step towards sustainable mobility in Italy, which the government is pursuing with increased determination under the Piano Nazionale di Ripresa e Resilienza (PNRR) (National Plan of Recovery and Resilience).
