Feb. 11--Derek and Renee Martin of Mount Pulaski were selected national winners at the National Outstanding Young Farmers Awards Congress held Feb. 7-10 in Bettendorf, Iowa.

Four national winners were selected from a group of 10 finalists for the award based on their progress in an agricultural career, extent of soil and water conservation practices, and contributions to the well-being of the community, state, and nation.

Guest Master of Ceremonies Orion Samuelson announced the four national winners and interviewed them for an upcoming episode of This Week in Agribusiness. The three other national winners for 2019 are from North Carolina, Maryland, and Iowa. National winners received a savings bond from corporate sponsor John Deere and the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C., during National Ag Week in 2020.

The family farm of Derek Martin began in 1827 with a man he describes as "a pioneer citizen that farmed with decided strength of character, rigid honesty of deeds and words, who was not afraid to work. These characteristics have been passed down in our family line throughout the last 200 years." As a seventh-generation farmer, Derek continues the family's commitment to conservation. His father began no-tilling in 1983, and Derek has expanded that practice to include cover crops on 50 percent of his 3,200 corn and soybean acres. He also works with an agronomist to develop a biological solution containing more than 4,000 beneficial fungi and bacteria.

His degree in farm and financial management from the University of Illinois led him to a career managing grain elevators prior to beginning farming five years ago. His wife, Renee, was a dental hygienist before their return to the family farm, and she now stays home to help with the farming operation and care for their two sons, Dean and Reed. Both the Martins coach youth sports, and Derek is president of the township park district, and drainage district. He is secretary of the Farm Bureau and attended the Leaders to Washington, D.C., program.

The NOYF program is the oldest farmer recognition program in the United States, selecting its first group of national winners in 1955. The program is sponsored by John Deere, administered by the Outstanding Farmers of America (OFA), and supported by the National Association of County Agricultural Agents and the U.S. Jaycees.
