Lagging shares were Aphria Inc , down 9.5 percent, Kinaxis Inc, down 7.7 percent, and Guyana Goldfields Inc, lower by 7.5 percent.

Leading gaingers were Boralex Inc , up 6.3 percent, SSR Mining Inc , up 3.5 percent, and Quebecor Inc  , higher by 3.1 percent.

On the TSX 73 issues rose and 170 fell as a 0.4-to-1 ratio favored decliners. There were 4 new highs and 23 new lows, with total volume of 240.8 million shares.

The most heavily traded shares by volume were Aurora Cannabis Inc , Bombardier Inc  and Aphria Inc.

The TSX's energy group  fell 1.98 points, or 1.20 percent, while the financials sector slipped 1.66 points, or 0.57 percent.

West Texas Intermediate crude futures fell 1.96 percent, or $1.18, to $59.01 a barrel. Brent crude  fell 1.28 percent, or $0.9, to $69.28 [O/R]

The TSX is off 6.5 percent for the year.
