SuperGrid Institute is an Institute for Energy Transition (ITE), a collaborative research platform based in Lyon and dedicated to the electrical power system of the future. The institute brings together French public research and industrial expertise, including Nexans' know-how in interconnections and power transmission networks. In just five years, SuperGrid Institute filed 50 patents, including 18 in 2018!

One of the key missions of the institute is to imagine and develop technologies, products and services for the Supergrid, the electricity transmission network of the future that would allow to increase the capacity of power networks and better manage the intermittent nature of renewable energy and ensure stability and security of the network. By interconnecting with existing alternating current systems, this power grid will allow to transport energy from renewable sources far from the centers of consumption, e.g. from the remote offshore wind farms, and integrate with flexible storage resources.

'By contributing to SuperGrid since its very beginnings, our commitment is to build complete HVDC solutions,' said Pierre Kayoun, Corporate Vice President Innovation & Technology at Nexans. 'The different skillsets gathered under the roof of the Institute constitute a rich and powerful network that allows us to study evolution trends of network architectures and interfaces <…> and accelerate our development in order to maintain our position as a global leader.'
