"Brazil is a key component of ATC's global innovation strategy and a crucial market in Latin America," said Abel Camargo, Senior Director of Strategy and New Business Development of American Tower Brazil. "We believe we can continue to play a key role in the deployment of telecommunications infrastructure to support advanced use cases for a number of years to come.”

ATC’s LoRaWAN-based network already covers the metro areas of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte. These large markets are responsible for around 25% of the Brazilian GDP, and ATC plans to continue rolling out this network to cover 50% of the Brazilian GDP, or approximately 80 cities, by mid-2019.

“The increasing deployment of large scale LoRaWAN-based networks using LoRa Technology represents a growing trend in IoT adoption globally,” said Vivek Mohan, Director of IoT in Semtech’s Wireless and Sensing Products Group. “American Tower’s deployment in Brazil is expected to bring an estimated 1.5 million additional devices online by the end of 2019, enabling smarter IoT solutions from metering applications to smart city networks. Latin America represents an important market for IoT adoption as part of the deployment of more efficient networks.”
