The Cora Group's innovative evolv1 building in Waterloo, Ontario, designed and engineered by Stantec, has captured a Canadian Consulting Engineering (CCE) Award. Evolv1 is Canada's first commercially driven, net positive multi-tenant building - it produces more energy than it consumes. Evolv1 was honoured with an Award of Excellence in the Buildings category.

Presented jointly by the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies - Canada (ACEC) and Canadian Consulting Engineer magazine, the 51st CCE Awards took place on October 29, 2019 in Ottawa. The awards recognize exceptional engineering projects by Canadian firms and highlight the important work consulting engineers do in communities across Canada and the world.

'Evolv1 is proof that a truly sustainable building can be cost effective and attractive,' says Kaid Al-Ani, a principal on Stantec's mechanical engineering team in Toronto and the lead mechanical engineer for evolv1. 'Our client, The Cora Group, challenged us to rethink our design process and tap into the creativity and knowledge of a multi-disciplinary team. That challenge inspired us. Thank you ACEC and CCE for recognizing the innovation and hard work that went into this revolutionary building.'

The 110,000 square foot evolv1, which celebrated its grand opening in 2018, has already been the recipient of prestigious awards, certifications, and accolades. In April 2018, the multi-tenant building was one of 16 elite projects across Canada to be selected by the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) to participate in a two-year pilot of its new Zero Carbon Building Standard. evolv1 was also the first building to earn the Zero Carbon Building - Design certification. In June 2018, evolv1 captured the first-ever Zero Carbon award, also from the CaGBC.

'Stantec had expertise in sustainability, architecture, and engineering-all under one roof,' said Adrian Conrad, president and chief operating officer of The Cora Group. 'These folks truly shared our vision for doing something disruptive in the industry.'

At the CCE awards gala, 20 Awards of Excellence were handed out in a range of categories. Of these, five were recognized with additional Special Achievement Awards for demonstrating the highest level of technical innovation, dedication to the environment, Canadian expertise abroad, and engineering that most enhances Canadians' social, economic or cultural quality of life. The evolv1 vision is a collaboration between The Cora Group, Sustainable Waterloo Region, The David Johnston Research & Technology Park, and anchor tenant EY. The building was constructed by Melloul Blamey and is targeting LEED® Platinum certification. Stantec's highly integrated design process incorporates active and passive systems to optimize value against construction cost. The high-performance building envelope incorporates triple glazing, a solar wall for preheated ventilation, a geo-exchange/VRF HVAC system, three-story green wall, and a combination of photovoltaics, or solar panels. evolv1 is also home to the Waterloo tech company, TextNow, and to evolvGREEN.
