The Toronto Stock Exchange's  S&P/TSX rose 149.90 points, or 0.92 percent, to 16,503.35.

Leading the index were Canfor Corp, up 7.5 percent, Ivanhoe Mines Ltd, up 7.4 percent, and TORC Oil & Gas Ltd, higher by 5.6 percent.

Lagging shares were New Gold Inc, down 6.1 percent, Bombardier Inc, down 5.8 percent, and CES Energy Solutions Corp, lower by 2.6 percent.

On the TSX 188 issues rose and 47 fell as a 4-to-1 ratio favored advancers. There were 29 new highs and no new lows, with total volume of 218.7 million shares.

The most heavily traded shares by volume were Bombardier Inc, Encana Corp and Manulife Financial Corp.

The TSX's energy group rose 1.32 points, or 0.9 percent, while the financials sector climbed 3.77 points, or 1.3 percent.

West Texas Intermediate crude futures rose 4.14 percent, or $2.15, to $54.08 a barrel. Brent crude  rose 2.23 percent, or $1.36, to $62.3 [O/R]

The TSX is up 15.2 percent for the year.
