Eastern Insurance Holdings, Inc. is an insurance holding company, which is engaged in the offering workers compensation insurance and reinsurance products through its direct and indirect wholly-owned subsidiaries: Global Alliance Holdings, Ltd., Eastern Alliance Insurance Co., Allied Eastern Indemnity Co., Eastern Advantage Assurance Co., Employers Security Insurance Co., Employers Alliance, Inc., Eastern Re, Ltd., S.P.C. and Eastern Services Corp. It operates through following three segments: Workers Compensation Insurance, Segregated Portfolio Cell Reinsurance and Corporate & Other. The Workers Compensation Insurance segment offers traditional workers compensation insurance coverage to employers. The workers compensation products include guaranteed cost policies, policyholder dividend policies, retrospectively-rated policies and deductible policies. The Segregated Portfolio Cell Reinsurance segment receives a fronting fee generally based upon a percentage of direct premiums written, a segregated portfolio cell rental fee, which is also based on a percentage of direct premiums written, and fees for claims administration and risk management services. The Corporate and Other segment primarily includes the expenses of the holding company, the third party administration activities of the company, and the non-segregated portfolio cell reinsurance results of operations of Eastern Re, as well as certain eliminations necessary to reconcile the segment information to the consolidated statements of operations and comprehensive income.
