Mr. Knowlton became a research analyst for Booz, Allen & Hamilton, a management-consulting firm, and an English teacher (Berkshire School).
Athenaeum published his first novel, The Real World, a comic novel about corporate life in 1984.
He joined Fortune Magazine as a reporter in 1985, and was promoted to an Associate Editor and Staff Writer two years later.
In 1990, soon after the fall of the Berlin Wall, he became Fortune’s European Correspondent and London Bureau Chief.
He conceived and wrote feature-length stories on a wide range of European business and policy topics, including the future of the European Community, the management practices of multinational corporations, European manufacturing competitiveness, and the wealth of the British Royal Family.
In 1992, he joined Knowlton Brothers Inc., a family money management firm founded by his father and uncle two years earlier.
In 1998, he became president of the firm.
Mr. Knowlton was educated at Phillips Exeter Academy, where he graduated with highest honors, and Harvard College, where he received a A.B.
cum laude in English and American Literature in 1979.
