Shares of energy companies fell, giving back early gains sparked by Russia's approval of the first Covid-19 vaccine.

Economically sensitive areas, including energy, initially gained value despite skepticism about the safety and viability of the Russian vaccine.

Occidental Petroleum fell after the recorded $6.6 billion in impairment charges for the second quarter, driving up losses at the oil producer, which is grappling with the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on global crude markets.

South African energy giant Sasol posted a loss for the fiscal year ended June 30, citing the pandemic and weak prices.
