International stocks trading in New York closed higher on Tuesday, extending Monday's gains.

The S&P/BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts rose 0.4% to 168.87. The European index rose 0.4% to 143.92. The Asian index was up 0.3% to 235.53. The Latin American index climbed 1.2% to 217.05. And the emerging-markets index was up 0.5% to 405.33.

AngloGold Ashanti Ltd. ADRs finished 2% higher at $19.66 after the company said Tuesday morning it had submitted a proposal to acquire Canada's Corvus Gold Inc. The cash offer, of four Canadian dollars a share, would expand on AngloGold's current roughly 20% indirect interest in Corvus.

ADRs of BP PLC closed down 1.2% at $25.58. The company said Tuesday it plans to buy the majority share of its Thorntons convenience-retail joint venture that it doesn't already own from ArcLight Capital Partners LLC. The deal, expected to be completed later this year, would give BP 208 owned and operated retail locations in Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee and Florida.
