Shares of energy companies fell as renewed spread of Covid-19 in many parts of the world quelled demand optimism.

India reported its worst daily death toll of the pandemic, as the populous nation placed large parts of the country now under lockdown. Separately, Japan is preparing to reintroduce a state of emergency in Tokyo and Osaka with just three months to go before the Summer Olympics are set to kick off in Tokyo.

Cases are also rising in many parts of the U.S., despite a relatively rapid vaccine rollout.

Executives at United Airlines warned the recovery in ticket sales was clouded by a bleak short-term outlook for business and long-haul travel.

Natural gas futures fell amid forecasts for milder weather in much of the U.S.
