Shares of industrial and transportation companies moved higher as investors showed a willingness to snap up stocks at large.

Fresh figures showed that 326,000 Americans applied for first-time unemployment benefits in the week ended Oct. 2, down from 364,000 the week prior, further boosting investor sentiment.

United Airlines will fly more than 3,500 daily domestic flights in December, the most since the Covid-19 pandemic began, to meet an expected surge in holiday travel demand. The airline said its December schedule would be 91% of its domestic schedule in 2019, suggesting the sector's recovery, at least domestically, was picking up.

Boeing's Starliner space vehicle won't get to attempt launch again this year, NASA officials said Wednesday, and two astronauts who were meant to fly on it were reassigned to a future mission using a SpaceX ship. The earliest the Starliner is likely to try to launch again is the April through June stretch in 2022, according to people familiar with the space vehicle.
