Producers of metals and other raw materials fell amid trepidation ahead of jobs data.

Automated Data Processing will issue the findings of its private-sector survey of August hiring Wednesday, revealing whether the spread of the Delta variant has had an impact on the labor market.

The dollar held flat against other currencies, giving a lift to gold futures, which finished August flat at around $1818 an ounce.

Live cattle futures fell 1.1%, the sixth-straight losing session as analysts at research firm Agrivisor said farmers were steadily culling cattle "due to poor pastures and high feed costs."
